Africa: The Continent and Its Geography

Africa's Vast Expanse:

Africa is the world's second-largest continent, covering an area of approximately 11,730,000 square miles (30,370,000 square kilometers). It is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Isthmus of Suez and the Red Sea to the northeast, and the Indian Ocean to the east.

Geographical Features:

Africa's coastline is approximately 18,950 miles (30,495 kilometers) long and features numerous gulfs, bays, and peninsulas. The continent is home to the world's largest hot desert, the Sahara Desert, as well as several other major deserts including the Kalahari Desert and the Namib Desert.

Africa is also the source of the Nile River, the longest river in the world, which flows for over 4,160 miles (6,695 kilometers) from its source in Burundi to the Mediterranean Sea.
